golden era getaway

kati curtis

Based in Manhattan and Los Angeles, interior designer Kati Curtis creates work that highlights the sophistication of New York with the flavor and just a twist of California. With a style that’s unrestrained yet very refined, Kati designs homes that are the visual story of the people living there. Her interiors are bold statements balanced by quiet details, such as the dark accents in a white room or the well-defined edge that contains a surprise of color.

Every project is a stunning expression of the three elements central to Kati’s interior design philosophy: crafted, cultured and collected. Fine craftsmanship: raising the level of refinement in any room. The culture of the client: bringing a layer of very personal expression into the home. And the collected: creating warmth and comfort through surroundings that have been acquired over time.

Kati founded KCD in 2005 after 12 years of working with international architecture and engineering firms. She is a Certified Interior Designer (CID) and a Leadership in Energy and Efficient Design Accredited Profession (LEED AP). Kati’s expertise in energy-efficient design allows her to express her passionate belief in sustainability.

A graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design, Kati is a sough-after speaker, design influencer and contributor at conferences, on panels and in the media. She travels frequently, and the colors, motifs, patterns and textures she sees influence all she designs.

“I love imagining Humphrey Bogart lounging with his cigar in this room. But I can also see someone using it today.” – Kati Curtis

It’s the contrast that I love—the glamour and the grit, the old and the new, the rough and the refined.

Casablanca The Golden Era was a time when the handcrafted blended with the modern. “Moroccan culture is also focused on craft and doing things in a time-honored way,” explains Kati, “but at the same time adapting that into modern life.” Appropriately, her room is based upon a hammam, an ancient bathing tradition that continues to this day.

Designing a room inspired by Casablanca has the potential of being busy and overwhelming. But Kati created a truly serene space. She kept the color palette fairly muted and selected faucets from the Keefe® Collection in a matte black finish. As she says, “There’s an inherent beauty in the faucets themselves—solid and architectural. They really pop against the tile.”

What translates so well with DXV is that you can create a historical space with a lot of ancient influences but use very modern pieces in a way that works beautifully.
